Hi all , Just wondering if anyone could help me please , Charlie is going to a farrier next thursday , he is one of the top farriers in the UK , also I know as ive seen results on what he did too Bill my other pony , but charlie has very compacted soles and i mean VERY, if i dont have any ACV to hand at the moment till tomorrow , im thinking water and salt Huh? Just to get me over till i can get some more , or could anyone suggest anything else please ??  also how long for and how many times a day so it will make it easier for the farrier next thursday and also easier for charlie .

Also do i put anything on his hoof after or just dry it off or not ??

Hope to hear from you soon so i can get on with it

thankyou all

Hey Janette,

I wouldn't use salt and think it would dry out the hoof more than moisten it.   And, I would not use any of the store bought pastes and applications on the hoof either as they do not allow moisture into the hoof and might seal in disease.

Plain water, hot water, acv/water solutions would all be good to help moisten the hoof and assist with contracted heels.  You could soak up to an hour a day to start and see how his hooves respond.  Different climates, horses, hooves, etc will dictate exactly what should be done.  So try it and see how things progress.

You could make a mud pond or shallow pool for Charlie in his playpen.  You would find him standing in it if his feet hurt.  Just hope the boots are off (lol).
Using a soaking boot or heavy bag with duct tape tyed around the top is all you would need.
Don't have to dry them off afterwards.
Keep it simple and as natural as possible.

Must go and will check in later,
Linda

thanks linda just gone and bought 5 litres of APV so wont run out now, ive soaked some gamgee padding in ACV and water solution put it in a plastic bag , then ill put his sabre sneakers on top , as i think he may try and bite a bag if i just left bags on his feet , just going to soak them now then its FLOTH time for them all , its  absolutely raining very hard here today.

thanks

Boots wouldnt fit over bag and soaked padding , so ive taped the bags on and theres loose ACV and Water swishing about in there , will give them a good soak today to get them started take them off at next FLOTH then lower the time from tomorrow , he tried to bite the bag at first but i stuck tape all over at the front now hes not bothering .

charlie had 4 hours having his feet soaked in ACV and Water Solution  , and they definitely must of needed it as the pads were nearly dry and no excess solution left in bag , and definitely looked better when i took the bags off , so i will do this every day and as much as i can, and hopefully by thursday it will be easier for the farrier to deal with the compacted sole .

goodnight all its 11.16 pm here in the UK
